Abbreviated L2TP. A proposed standard for a secure, high-priority, temporary communications path through the Internet. L2TP is based on Cisco's Layer 2 Forwarding (L2F) protocol and includes features from Microsoft's Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP). A tunnel is established from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to a corporate site, and information is transmitted through the tunnel. Once L2TP is set up, the user communicates with the corporate system through what seems to be a direct dial-up connection; the ISP is effectively removed from the picture.
